Marcus Rashford’s off-field actions slammed by Darren Bent amid Man Utd slump

Darren Bent has slammed Marcus Rashford‘s off-field actions in the aftermath of Manchester United‘s disappointing 1-0 defeat to Wolves on Monday night.

Ralf Rangnick‘s unbeaten start to life at United came to an abrupt end after Joao Moutinho’s late strike.

United put in a toothless display under the German – and a number of the club’s attacking stars, including Rashford, have come in for criticism since the game.

And Bent believes that Rashford, who has been involved in a string of inspiring schemes off the pitch over the past couple of years, looks like he has “the world on his shoulders” – and appeared to suggest that his focus on matters away from the pitch was hampering his form on it.

“When you played Manchester United when they were really successful, you used to stand in the tunnel and every single one of their players used to stand their with their chest out and they wanted to carry the burden of that shirt and wear it with pride,” Bent told talkSPORT after Luke Shaw questioned the commitment of some of his team-mates after the Wolves defeat.

“It’s almost like this Manchester United team are scared to wear the shirt. Even when they get taken off for substitutions, they can’t get off the pitch quick enough.

“Even Marcus Rashford at the minute seems to have the world on his shoulders. He’s thinking about every else other than football.

“I’m not quite sure what direction they are going in.

“When you play for that football club and that arena, surely if that doesn’t get you up for football then I don’t know what will.

“That’s one of the most iconic stadiums in football and playing for arguably the biggest club in the world.

“The motivation line he gave there is not a good look. That doesn’t fall on Ralf Rangnick, that falls on the players. They are the ones who have to get motivated.”

Bent went on to suggest that some players poor body language could be down to Cristiano Ronaldo being seemingly untouchable under the German interim boss.

Rangnick responded to criticism of the 36-year-old star by handing him the captain’s armband for the Wolves clash.

“I look at some of the players’ body language and you’ve got some of the players looking at other players thinking ‘it doesn’t matter how he plays, he’s always going to play. It doesn’t matter how I play, I’m going to be sacrificed’,” added Bent.

“[Cristiano] Ronaldo has been made captain and it doesn’t matter how he plays, he’s always going to play.

“The likes of [Mason] Greenwood, who is giving absolutely everything, and Jadon Sancho, who is trying to rediscover his form, just not getting a fair crack at it.”
