Real Madrid are a step closer to completing the signing of Antonio Rudiger on a free transfer after bettering Chelsea’s contract offer to the German.

The defender is out of contract at the end of the season and he’s rejected two salary proposals from Chelsea.

The Blues are offering Rudiger a weekly salary of around £140,000-a-week but the German wants double that and to be on parity with the club’s top earners.

Chelsea are unwilling to stretch that far as they fear it will set a dangerous precedent to other players that are out of contract this summer, such as Cesar Azpilicueta and Thiago Silva.

Thomas Tuchel is desperate to keep Rudiger and Chelsea have not given up hope of persuading the Germany international to stay at Stamford Bridge.

But their inability to agree on a salary has opened the door to Real Madrid, who are targeting free transfers due to the club’s crippling financial position.

Nevertheless, Carlo Ancelotti’s side remain one of the most enticing clubs on the planet and they have bettered Chelsea’s offer to Rudiger, according to Duncan Castles.

It means Chelsea must move quickly if they’re to keep up their bid to sign Rudiger, as the German can sign a pre-contract agreement with Madrid from January 1st.

Rudiger has reportedly spoken to former Chelsea team-mates Eden Hazard and Thibaut Courtois about life in the Spanish capital.

He is said to feel undervalued by the club, given he is earning substantially less than the likes of N’Golo Kante and Romelu Lukaku.
