‘Beloved baby’: Family devastated by death of Perth girl, 1, crushed by falling drawers

The family of a one-year-old Perth girl crushed under a chest of drawers has described the toddler’s death as an unthinkable tragedy.

In a statement to 7NEWS, the young girl’s devastated family said: “Our beloved baby Tayla was the victim of a tragic accident we would not want any family to go through.”

Little Tayla was killed when a chest of drawers fell on her about 5.30pm on Wednesday at a home in Byford, in Perth’s south east.

She was rushed to Armadale Hospital but her injuries were too severe for her to be saved.

Community in mourning

A fundraising effort has been launched by the Rwandan Community Abroad group in Perth to help cover funeral costs, with more than $7000 raised as of Monday.

“The African community is saddened with the news of the loss of a young child in our community,” RCA said in a statement.

“We would like to take this time to send our heartfelt condolences to the family who’s going through a tragic period of grief and loss.

“We encourage our community members to be there for one another and provide as much support to the affected family.”

Police said Tayla’s death was not suspicious and a report would be prepared for the Coroner.

KidSafeWA estimates about 27 West Australian children under the age of 15 die from injury each year, including toppling furniture.

The leading child accident prevention foundation encourages parents with young children to buy low furniture, and use straps or affix their items to the wall where possible to prevent furniture from falling.
