Barcelona eye ex-Chelsea star Oscar but move for £563,000-a-week ace is ‘difficult’

Barcelona are reportedly considering a shock move to sign former Chelsea midfielder Oscar.

Oscar, 30, swapped Chelsea for a move to Chinese Super League club Shanghai Port in 2017 for an estimated £60million.

The former Brazil international is said to earn wages worth £563,000-a-week – which roughly equates to £28m per year – and has a contract which runs until 2024.

And according to Brazilian journalist Marcelo Bechler, Barcelona have contacted the player over a possible move to the Camp Nou.

However, Bechler highlights that any deal will be ‘difficult’ given the club’s on-going financial struggles.

Barcelona are on the lookout for a replacement following the departure of Philippe Coutinho to Aston Villa on loan last week.

Coutinho struggled to nail down a regular starting berth at the Camp Nou under Xavi Hernandez and was subsequently allowed to join Steven Gerrard’s Villa on loan until the end of the season.

Since moving to China, Oscar has made 113 appearances in the Super League, scoring 34 times and registering 73 assists.

Oscar also helped his side – who were then known as Shanghai SIPG – win the Chinese Super League title in 2018, as well as the Chinese FA Super Cup in the following campaign.

The Brazilian has not featured for his country since turning out in a 2018 World Cup qualifier back in October 2016.

Xavi’s side registered yet another disappointing result on Saturday when they could only manage a 1-1 draw with Granada in LaLiga.

Luuk de Jong opened the scoring for Barcelona just before the hour mark, but the visitors had to settle for a point after Antonio Puertas popped up with an equaliser with just minutes to go in the contest.

The result leaves Barcelona in sixth with 32 points from 20 games, which is 17 fewer than league leaders Real Madrid.
