Arsenal and West Ham fans agree Anthony Taylor and VAR got ‘horrific’ pen call wrong

Arsenal and West Ham are in agreeance that the Gunners should have been awarded a penalty during their clash on Wednesday evening.

Gabriel Martinelli had notched Arsenal ahead with a wonderful curling effort that nestled into the far corner.

And Alexandre Lacazette was given the golden opportunity to double their lead from the spot, but the penalty decision was controversial.

Vladimir Coufal, who was already on a yellow looked to have beaten Lacazette to the ball before Anthony Taylor flagged for a penalty.

Replays seemed to confirm Coufal reached the ball first, but the penalty stood – and both sets of fans agreed it shouldn’t have stood.

“That’s a horrific decision was a good tackle. Lacazette [has] been flopping all game,” one Hammers fan fumed.

Another added: “The games gone. That’s such a poor decision. So so poor.”

“This is what VAR is supposed to be here for. Total disgrace,” a third tweeted.

A fourth said: “What a joke of a penalty. Sent him off as well…..”

And even Arsenal fans agreed: “I’m an Arsenal fan, but that’s not a penalty or a yellow card. Really harsh.”

Another added: “That penalty was pretty harsh, just the height of the feet let Coufal down, felt it was karma for West Ham that Lukasz kept it out.”

“I’m an Arsenal fan, and that’s not a penalty. Bad refereeing,” a third added.

“No penalty… just taking tackling out of the game and that’s coming from an Arsenal fan,” a fourth added.

However, Lacazette wasn’t able to convert the spot-kick as Lukasz Fabianski sprawled down to his left to keep West Ham within a shout of winning.

But Emile Smith Rowe was able to put the clash beyond doubt when he converted shortly afterwards.
