Andy Carroll scores ‘best two goals you’ll ever see’ – but both ruled out seconds apart

Andy Carroll was left devastated after scoring two of the best goals of his career for Reading against Fulham in the Championship on Tuesday – because both were ruled to be offside.

The former Liverpool and England striker was looking to give Reading an unlikely foothold against Marco Silva’s side in their rearranged fixture, but was at the mercy of the linesman’s flag.

The 33-year-old, who joined the club on a short-term deal with reduced wages in November, thought he had added to his only goal of the season against Swansea with a stunning overhead kick in the first-half.

However, the linesman spotted that he had walked offside just before the cross came in, and he suffered the same fate after an even more impressive scorching volley a matter of minutes later.

One fan wrote on Twitter: “Andy Carroll just scored two of the best disallowed goals you’re ever going to see.”

With a second adding: “Andy Carroll still has it in his locker, shame they don’t count.”

A third continued: “Never knew he was at Reading..how gutted would you be, to have these disallowed.”

And a fourth concluding: “A don’t care how far offside he was, it’s a crime that second goal was disallowed.”

Carroll’s nightmare moments came after Harry Wilson had given the visitors the lead in their first league outing since December 20.

Things went from bad to worse for the home side with Aleksandar Mitrovic getting his 23rd goal of the season, before Wilson grabbed his second, Kenny Tete got a fourth, Neeskens Kebano made it five and Tosin added a sixth.

Carroll’s short-term deal is reportedly worth a measly £1,000-a-week – 75 times less than his wage at Newcastle during his most recent Premier League spell.

Carroll had kept himself fit over the summer period without a club, waiting for an opportunity to get back into the professional game.

Royals Chief Executive Dayong Pang said at the time: “With long-term injuries to two of our key goalscorers, our strength in depth in attack has understandably been limited all season, so I am very pleased that Andy has agreed to join us.

“With a proven eye for goal, I am sure he will offer our first team squad something different as we approach another busy period of Championship football.”
